21 Days to Look After Yourself: A Roadmap
When worry takes up a lot of room, one small step a day can help you catch your breath.
Here is a roadmap in 21 steps, like an inner journey to take at your own pace. Nothing says you have to do it all, or in order.

Week 1: Settle in
- Day 1 · Buy your ticket. Decide: “I’m starting this journey.” That’s already a step.
- Day 2 · Breathe. Three times a day, take one minute of deep breathing.
- Day 3 · The logbook. Write down your negative thoughts without judging them, just to observe them.
- Day 4 · An exploratory walk. Go for a stroll and pay close attention to everything around you.
- Day 5 · A sensory pause. Choose one sense and explore it for 5 minutes.
- Day 6 · The passing thought. “It’s only a cloud drifting by. I let it pass and come back to the sensations in my body.”
- Day 7 · Simple gratitude. Three things, even small ones, that brightened your day.
Week 2: Bring movement into your day
- Day 8 · Move your energy. Dance, yoga, a brisk walk: get your body moving.
- Day 9 · Notice your “what ifs”. Write down your worst-case scenarios and ask yourself: “What evidence do I really have?”
- Day 10 · A digital pause. Two hours without your phone or social media, especially in the evening.
- Day 11 · A gentle act. A bath, a book, some rest, a walk outdoors: something good and kind for you.
- Day 12 · Coffee with someone. Talk to a person you trust, even briefly.
- Day 13 · An inner smile. Try smiling several times a day. See what it changes inside you.
- Day 14 · A little morning ritual. Breathing, soft music, an inspiring read, a few lines to set your intention for the day: a mini-ritual to start your day well.
Week 3: You’re in charge of your life
- Day 15 · Name the worry. Give it a first name or an image (“my hamster on its wheel”). It helps you step back.
- Day 16 · Write the letter. “From today, I’m the one handling this situation, and I’m taking the reins of my life back.”
- Day 17 · Micro-meditation. Two minutes, eyes closed, focus on your breathing: in, out = a relaxed body.
- Day 18 · Say no. To one small thing today. Setting a limit feels good: saying NO to someone else is saying YES to yourself.
- Day 19 · Notice your successes. Write down every small victory, even a tiny one.
- Day 20 · Letting go on purpose. Choose one situation you can’t control and accept it for 24 hours.
- Day 21 · The celebration. Reread your notebook, savour how far you’ve come and choose a way to celebrate.
Key takeaways
- One small gesture a day counts for more than one big effort now and then.
- Breathing, moving, writing, talking, setting a limit: several ways in.
- You’ve learned to have a conversation with whatever moves through you: your emotions, your feelings and perceptions.
When to talk to someone
If the worry settles in (restless nights, a tightness in your body, a feeling that you can’t cope any more), it can be valuable to talk about it: to your doctor for anything to do with your body and sleep, and to a therapist for what you’re going through. I see clients for individual sessions in the 15th arrondissement of Paris and online.
